Sandwich - Caroline "Gribbles" Shook, 93, formerly of DeSoto and Sandwich, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2013. Caroline was born April 21, 1920 to Ralph and Flora (Williams) Snider in Blairsville. She met and wed Randolph Shook, in Brampton, England on August 15, 1945, while both were serving in WWII. They enjoyed a military honeymoon on the Isle of Man. Sgt. Caroline Shook served as a historical stenographer for the 8th AF 1st Air Division, HDQ12, Air Bases, WAC Det., Brampton, England. Caroline is survived by her son, Randolph K. (Barbara) Shook Jr. of Sandwich; four daughters, Nancy (George) Abens of Earlville, Karen (Lance Davenport) Mander of Plano, Patty (Brad) Daw of Oswego and Marilyn (Perry) Murry of DeSoto; two brothers, Ralph (Doris) Snider Jr. and George (Mary Ann) Snider, both of DeSoto; a sister, Kathryn Ashley of College Park, MD; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Randolph Shook Sr., parents, sisters, Reatha Claire Snider, Genevieve Snider and Georgia S. Canady, and son-in-law, Richard L. Mander. Caroline was of Protestant faith and had attended Mt Calvary Lutheran Church in DeSoto. She was a member of the 8th AF Historical Society, the Women's Overseas Service League (WOSL) and the Jackson County Farm Bureau. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with Rev. Frank Schroeder officiating. Interment will be at DeSoto Cemetery with Military Rites. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home on Saturday. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to SIMSS, 602 Douglas, Pinckneyville, IL 62274 or Women's Overseas Service League (WOSL), PO Box 124 Cedar Knolls, NJ 07297-0124, and will be accepted at the funeral home.
